Addiction is a serious problem that is prone to create havoc and much suffering in the lives not only of the addict but their family members as well. Historically the main approach to treating addiction has been based on the twelve step model that requires total abstinence and a commitment to attend twelve step meetings on a regular, weekly basis, pretty much for the rest of that person’s life. This is an excellent program that has helped millions of people worldwide. However, in 2014, I became trained in a new and very exciting approach to treating addiction that does not require abstinence and instead focuses on eliminating the compulsive urges and cravings of either substance or behavioral addictions. This enables the person to choose whether they would like to continue to use that behavior or substance at a non-harmful level should they wish. For example, someone with a binge-drinking problem can still enjoy one or two beers if they would like but can then decide to stop there. On the other hand, a smoker would most likely want to quit entirely.
This approach was developed by Ph.D. psychologist Dr. Robert Miller and is known as the Feeling State Addiction Protocols. It is a rapid and highly effective treatment modality that utilizes the same bilateral stimulation of the brain that is used in EMDR therapy.
Below is a list of some of the main forms of addiction the FSAP’s can successfully address:
